Abstract:
This study aims to determine when infants’ lexical representations come to include specific consonants. Previous research suggests that infants as young as 6 to 9 months old already know the meanings of some common words (Bergelson & Swingley, 2012) but that the vowels in early words may not be precisely represented before 11 months (Bergelson & Swingley, 2018). If consonants anchor word knowledge in early infancy, however, infants’ sensitivity to consonant mispronunciations should emerge earlier. This study will test infants from 6 to 14 months in order to identify at what age their recognition (relative looking to the target image) becomes impaired when a word’s initial consonant (or consonant cluster) is replaced by a different consonant (or consonant cluster): e.g., “nottle” instead of “bottle”. ...
